About the escape room

Set on the edge of Edinburgh's old surgical district, The Anatomist is an award winning escape game that invites you to descend into a world of grave robbery, mystery and malpractice as you enter the basement study of a 19th century anatomist. How has Dr Malcolm been procuring bodies for dissection? What research takes place here late into the night? And what terrible 'crime' did Mr Patterson witness that caused him to flee in fear? Dr Malcolm's journal will reveal all, if you can find it before he returns...

Important information and features of the escape room

Due to the macabre themes, 'The Anatomist' Escape Room is not recommended for those under 12 years. Each group must contain at least one adult over the age of 18 who must be physically present in the room. You will never be physically locked in. Disabled access can usually be arranged given prior notice; the venue is in a basement with a 72cm wide doorway. Please arrive 10 minutes before your game is due to begin. All bookings are private. The room is more 'creepy' than overtly scary and contains gore. Toilet on site; please use in advance if possible. Comfortable clothing and supportive shoes recommended. Stag & Hen do's allowed but no alcohol influence.

AI Overview

AIReviews consistently praise the immersive period set, strong theming, and a narrative that ties cleanly into the tasks. The room is broadly non‑linear with multiple spaces, so bigger groups can split and stay busy. A few interactions feel unintuitive and some teams needed gentle nudges. Expect mild jump scares, one confined section, and a moderate difficulty that many enthusiasts finish in 35–45 minutes.

WeaknessesSome mechanisms aren’t immediately clear and may require hints. A couple of jump scares and a tight space won’t suit everyone. Enthusiast groups can blaze through and wish it lasted longer.

StrengthsGorgeous, authentic set design with eerie details and great atmosphere. Varied, clever puzzles with memorable reveals and a final sequence that clicks together well. Hosts are friendly, in character, and keep the pace lively.

SecurityBriefings are clear and staff keep an eye on you the whole time. There’s at least one confined section; teams can plan who tackles it and ask for accommodations if needed.

Level of fearMore eerie than terrifying, with the odd jump scare and some anatomical props. Teens should be fine, but very young or squeamish players might be uncomfortable.

Actors' gameGame masters are praised for in‑character briefings, attentive support, and smooth hint delivery. A few groups felt the nudges were a bit proactive, so say upfront if you prefer to ask for clues.

Quality of riddlesPlenty of variety, from ordering and weights to a cryptex and layered multi‑step tasks, mostly fair and on theme. Non‑linear structure lets multiple puzzles run in parallel. A couple of gadgets are less intuitive, but solutions make sense once guided.

PlotYou’re sneaking into Dr. Malcolm’s study to uncover how bodies were procured and to track down his journal before he returns. The story unfolds through the environment and clues without spoiling the ending.

Difficulty levelSolid mid‑tier challenge. Newer players will manage with teamwork and the odd hint, while experienced groups may escape quickly.

Non‑linear, multi‑space layout with a spooky aesthetic that never tips into full horror. We got caught by a couple of jump scares and there’s a small confined section for one teammate. Loved the mix of classic puzzles—ordering, weights, a cryptex—and the finale clicks together in a really satisfying way. We split up, stayed busy, and finished in about 45 minutes. A strong room, a touch easier than

I’d wanted to play this for ages and it absolutely delivered. Beautiful rooms, puzzles that fit the theme, and loads of secrets that pop at just the right time. It feels like a classic that’s aged brilliantly. We escaped in 34 minutes and honestly wished we’d had more time to soak up the set.

Took the family of five, three teens, and everyone had something to do thanks to the mostly non‑linear flow. The décor nails the story, our host stayed in character and was lovely, and the puzzle mix kept us moving. We did get more hints than I’d usually ask for, but, truthfully, they probably saved our time. Bonus: handy parking right next door.

Brilliant experience. The set feels authentic, the puzzles use the space in smart, quirky ways, and there are satisfying reveals as you go. Hosting by Oliver was excellent, and we’d happily return for whatever they build next.

Looks fantastic and the immersion is strong. Puzzles aren’t super hard but do ask for teamwork and some lateral thinking. Minimal tech fits the historical setting, and the in‑character briefing from a very friendly GM set the tone perfectly.

Atmosphere for days and some standout aha moments. The props feel authentically old, and the GM kept things flowing without stealing our thunder.

Heads‑up: there’s a tight crawl for one person, which I was fine with but my friend skipped. Otherwise, great theming and clean puzzle logic. Would recommend.

Theming is top‑tier and just the right amount of eerie. There are some clever moments and our GM was excellent. The only gripe: a couple of devices weren’t intuitive to operate, so we needed hints, but it was still a great time.

If you like non‑linear games, this one’s your jam. Our group split up, tackled different strands, then converged for a really satisfying end. Not too scary, just tense enough.

Loved the vibe from the first minute. Rich, dusty study vibes, creepy jars later on, and a finale that ties everything together so neatly. We left grinning.

Gorgeous build and a heap of fun puzzles with some neat surprises. We were a big team and got out fast, and I kind of wish we’d lingered longer to admire the set—it's that pretty.

Cracking room with heaps to do. A couple of locks and widgets felt a bit finicky, but the hosting was spot on and the story sings.

Really fun room with a nice non‑linear structure and strong theming. A few puzzles didn’t read clearly to us, so we needed a couple of nudges, but I’d still recommend it overall.
